Since I totally quit smoking I’ve noticed my weight slowly creep upwards. Well, to be more accurate, I’ve noticed my trousers get tighter and tighter! So today I stepped onto the scales and was not happy at all…
I’ve been on the heavy side for as long as I can really remember and for the last few years I’ve mostly kept my weight around 16.5 stone, give or take a few pounds. I’ve also told myself that whilst it’s obviously not the most healthy weight for me to be, it’s not all that bad, it could be worse and I wasn’t really that old (I’m currently 33) so there would be plenty of time to loose weight later.
Well guess what? That day has now come.. Today I weigh in at the “grand” weight of 247lbs (112kg). At my height of 5′ 10″ that give me a BMI of 35.4, officially making me obese!
It’s now been around 10 weeks since I cut out all smoking (it feels much longer though) and although it was hard it was something that I truly wanted to do, which made it achievable. I firmly believe that was the key to quiting smoking – I had tried before but I never really, honestly wanted to give up, which is why I’d failed to quit so many times before.
So now it’s time to stop ignoring the problem and face the fat head on…
This is going to be soooo much harder! I absolutely love my food and loath exercise. Everyone I work with will tell you that I am constantly eating – bacon rolls, sausage rolls, chocolate, crisps and more and I’ve always got a mug of hot sweet coffee on hand to keep the sugar and caffiene levels up!
To top that off I’m also not overly keen on that thing called exercise! I’m usually coerced into playing a game of badminton once a week, although if the truth be known it’s more like once every three weeks at the moment! I drive to the local shops which are a mere 5 minute walk away on the pretext of “heavy shopping bags” and I’ve completely ignore the free gym facilities at work recently…
Enough is enough – it’s off to badminton at the leisure centre tomorrow and whilst I’m there I’m going to find out about the special gym membership rate for employees and see whether it would allow me to use the pool before work in the mornings.
Believe it or not I used to be a lifeguard! Imagine that! Me in a pair of Speedos!
